Snowy owls are here

You don’t have to be a seasoned bird watcher to notice snowy owls appearing in the skies around Rochester. Reports of these beautiful birds near Braddock’s Bay and the Lake Ontario shoreline at Charlotte and Summerville have been popping up all over Facebook and in the media. Just last week there was an article in the Democrat & Chronicle about this temporary influx though our area.

These gorgeous white spotted owls have migrated in this direction due to the large abundance of food available in this area. The Harry Potter series of books and movies brought attention to these birds as Harry’s pet owl, Hedwig. Kids everywhere suddenly decided they wanted an owl of their own. That is not something we would ever encourage, but we do have two resident snowy owls in our collection available for ZooParent Adoption.

Snowy owl ornamentYou can “adopt” an owl as part of our ZooParent program. Donations made through this program provide enrichment items that offer physical and mental stimulation to keep our animals healthy and strong! For as little as $30, you can adopt a snowy owl for one year and receive a personalized certificate, a fun fact sheet about the snowy owl, a matted 4”x 6” owl photo and see your name on our ZooParent Board  in the E.C.O. Center here at the Zoo. You will also receive an invitation to the annual ZooParent Party in September! In addition, as part of this special winter adoption package, you will receive an exclusive 2013 Snowy owl ornament!

There are many levels of ZooParent Adoption available. Please check out the list of benefits on our Web site or call the Member Office at (585) 336-7212.

Meanwhile, I hope you are lucky enough to spot one of these magnificent birds in the wild while they are here temporarily! If not, you can always see or adopt one here on your next visit to the Zoo!

It’s birthday time for our otters!

Come celebrate birthdays for our female North American river otters Heather and Sara from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 2. Be sure to warm up your singing voice and serenade them with “Happy Birthday” at 2 p.m. One of our talented volunteers will be on hand to create unique animal drawings for the little ones, too!

The birthday party will be held in the E.C.O. Center and will feature festive decorations, a docent touch table station and treats for the otters. If you would like to bring a gift to the party, please do! Our zoo keepers appreciate items to keep our animals happy and healthy. Suggested enrichment items for our animal birthday parties are unopened spices or perfumes, unopened low-fat cereal and flat bed sheets. Monetary donations or gift cards from Wegmans or Home Depot are always welcome, since they allow zoo keepers to purchase specialty items.

This birthday party is also an opportunity to give a gift of adoption to someone or to adopt an otter yourself. Our ZooParent Program provides enrichment items to help keep all of our Zoo animals physically and mentally active and in good health. On your next visit, you can pick up a form right at the Front Gate or at several locations throughout the Zoo near the animal exhibits. You can also receive more information about this program by calling (585) 336-7212 or visiting our Web site.

Adoptions start at only $30 each. A $60 Defender of Wildlife level ZooParent adoption of a North American river otter includes a personalized adoption certificate, fun fact sheet, $10 ZooShop gift certificate, two free Zoo admission passes, a 4” x 6” framed photo and your name on the ZooParent Board located in the E.C.O. Center for one year. Plus, you will receive an invitation to the annual ZooParent Party held in September!

Mark your calendar to attend on March 2and bring the whole family for this celebration. It’s sure to be a good time for all!

Mom, may I have a rhinoceros?

Of course, our animals are part of a living collection and must reside at the Seneca Park Zoo. But there is a way to answer yes when children ask to have their favorite animal!

Please consider adopting a white rhino for your child or as a gift. The ZooParent Adoption Program provides funding that allows our zoo keepers to purchase the enrichment items you see in the exhibits, such as the ropes, slides and boomer balls. These items stimulate the animals physically and mentally. The basic adoption donation starts at only $30. At the ZooParent level, the adoptive parent receives a personalized certificate of adoption, a fun fact sheet, a matted 4″ x 6″ photo, plus their name on our ZooParent Board in the E.C.O. Center for one year. The adoptive parent will also receive an invitation to our annual ZooParent Party in September!

We also celebrate the birthdays of our signature animals. This provides another way for kids to feel like they are a part of an animal’s life in lieu of taking it home. For example, children can attend our birthday party on Feb. 9 for Bill and Roscoe, the Zoo’s resident bachelor white rhinos. Feel free to bring a gift of unopened extracts or spices that zoo keepers can use as treats for enrichment. These half-brothers are one of the most amusing pairs of animals at this Zoo. They are all “boy” with their rough-and-tumble playfulness. Crowds gather when they are up to their antics!

Please consider adopting an animal at their birthday party or any day at the Zoo’s Front Gate, online or by calling the Member Office at (585) 336-7212. Adoption packages are generally processed in 5 to 7 days.

The next time your child asks for something out of the ordinary, like having a Zoo animal, remember our animals are available through the ZooParent Program. We’d love to make your child’s wish come true.

Count on ZooParent gifts for the holidays!

Are you looking for unique gifts for those on your holiday shopping list? Are you looking for items that will please the recipient, support a good cause and ease your gift giving stress? Count on gifts through the ZooParent adoption program to meet all these challenges.

A ZooParent adoption provides benefits in three ways. It provides benefits for the recipient, like the pride of becoming a “parent” who receives recognition at the Zoo, personalized certificate, fun fact sheet and photo of the animal chosen. ZooParents are invited to our annual party in September, an after-hours event that is sure to please guests of all ages. The second benefit is for the Zoo’s animals themselves, since funds allow zoo keepers to purchase enrichment items that stimulate animal senses and keep the animals minds and bodies healthy and strong. And lastly, it provides you with a distinctive gift idea for the friend or relative who has everything!

There are four levels of adoptions available and each includes specific benefits to suit gift givers or recipients. Click here to view the ZooParent options available. Count on there being a level that meets your needs!

Are you counting on receiving a holiday special? Until Dec. 1, those adopting an African black-footed penguin at any level (starting at $30) will receive a free plush penguin. Those adopting any animal at the Defender of Wildlife Level ($60 or more) will receive a free Seneca Park Zoo water bottle. Details about these offers are available by calling the Member Office at (585) 336-7212.

Is this gift for Christmas Day or are you counting on delivery in time for your family’s exchange? Please order a ZooParent adoption gift by Dec. 14 to allow for processing and mailing. However, gift certificates with these special offers are available even for last minute shoppers. Stop at our Front Gate through the end of the year – until 3 p.m. on Christmas Eve when our Front Gate closes!

We count on folks like you to provide support for Seneca Park Zoo animals. You can count on the ZooParent program for assistance with your holiday shopping!
